EDITORS COLUMN

I have had no response to my questions about including colour pictures in the Magazine so I guess it will continue in black and white.
The club’s first "overseas" rally is on - see elsewhere in this issue.  You will see in the Membership section that Celia is standing down at the AGM.  She has put in a lot of effort to this task (despite problems with her pc and internet provider) and I shall be sorry to see her step down. This means that we will need a replacement at the AGM. If you think that you can offer your services why not get in touch with Celia who can explain what is involved.
Roy
tells me that there is a distinct lack of volunteers to marshal the Show Rallies next year, so I have put Judy and myself forward to do Peterborough again.  If you are intending going to any of the other shows, why not try a bit of marshalling? Otherwise the rallies will have to be cancelled.  We need marshals for Great Driffield, Newbury, Lincoln, Shepton Mallet and York.  It will be a shame not to rally at these shows just because no one is willing to marshal the event.

You will not receive this before Christmas so I will just say -

Judy and Ron wish you all a

Happy and Trouble-free

New Year

The next issue is due out at the beginning of April, so input to me by 25th March at the latest please.

MEMBERS’ LETTERS

Shepton Report, and a bit more

Anne & Ian Robb

Many thanks for the coasters which finally caught up with us this week at La Manga (the coasters are a little token of thanks for marshalling - Ed) .  Since we arrived here at the beginning of October the weather has been very sunny and hot, up to 34C.  I must apologise for the lack of a report on the rally at Shepton Mallet Show. I must confess that I forgot to ask for a volunteer at the rally and because we were heading for the ferry immediately after the Show it went completely out of my mind.  However, here is a very brief recollection:- The weekend weather could not have been kinder to us with wall to wall sunshine all weekend which added to the very enjoyable time had by all who attended. A total of 12 Benimars parked on the BOC site, two of which turned up on spec but were able to be accommodated.  Saturday brought a visit from the Club secretary Celia who not only visited the club area but was very busy round the rest of the show and Benimar stand trying to recruit new members.  Steve, from RDH, with his Mr Fixit van was also kept busy all weekend and did a sterling job attending to the little problems and repairs which members came up with.  On the Sunday morning we had an informal get-together for coffee and biscuits and 2 new members who had bought a Benimar at the show were welcomed; they were friends of Colin and Frances Varley but unfortunately in transit to La Manga their names have been misplaced.  All in all I think that the members who attended had an enjoyable weekend and (at least judging by the number of carrier bags and parcels coming back to the site) an expensive one.  We will be wintering here at La Manga until the end of March, when we will set off on our slow journey back to Scotland, arriving at the end of April - beginning of May. Meanwhile we will be thinking of you all in the cold and wet of the British winter (but not for long). Until next year.

3850 Kg Gross Weight and MOTs

John Allen

I purchased a Benimar Aereo in June plated at 3850 kg with a taxation class of "Private HGV". I noticed in previous magazines the problem experienced with MOTs.  Because of the letters I decided to write to the DVLA to find out the position before I received my first licence reminder. I have received a reply from the Vehicle Inspectorate which appears to clear the position. The letter states :-
"A motor caravan is defined as a vehicle fully equipped with permanently fixed equipment which are reasonably necessary for mobile living accommodation and no space to carry goods or burden. I your vehicle fully meets this specification then it requires a Class 4 MOT. The first MOT is required 3 years from the date of registration".
I will keep this letter in a safe place , to be shown to those people who think that they know better! I hope that this will help those members who have faced the same problem.
Thanks for the magazine. We had already booked our itinerary for the whole year which did not coincide with any of the club meets. That is the main reason that you have not seen us.

New Van - Empty Hall

Moya David Warner

Well at long last we can profess to being proper Benimar Club members, having taken delivery of our vehicle in the middle of August.  We were wondering if we would ever get it (having ordered it at the NEC earlier in the year). Nothing seemed to be going our way and Dave was concerned that the ferry carrying our Benimar from Spain would sink on the way over!  But of course it didn’t and we eventually took delivery and it is everything we expected.
We were soon on our way on our first trip in it to Devon, having first transferred the contents of our hall, that had been accumulating since we placed the order, to the motorhome. The hall now looks strangely empty.  One of the first sites we visited we were pleasantly surprised to see another Benimar, very similar to our own. Having parked and got ourselves organised we decided to go and make ourselves known to the occupants of the other Benimar, only to find that they did not belong to the "club". Having sung your praises, Terry and Jane from Leicester said that they would consider joining. Pity we hadn’t got the recently enclosed membership form at the time.  Hope to catch up with some of you in the near future, especially when Dave retires in February.

Site in the garden of Eden

Roy Gill

After leaving the York Rally we went to Cornwall and of course called at the Eden Project. We had no sites booked, so headed in the direction of the Project. A mile from the project is a pub site - the Innis Inn. The pitches have hook-ups, but no hard standings. Toilet block is clean, but no hot water to the taps. Showers are clean and tidy. Price is £7 plus £1.75 for electricity.  The man who directed us to our pitch said that you could walk to the Project via the fish ponds. On checking with the landlord he did not recommend it, as it involved climbing a wall and walking down a narrow road with no footpath. Parking is OK with the van at the Project.  I think that to walk from the site, around the Project and then walking back to the site would knacker most Benimar owners. (Now there’s a challenge - Ed)  We also did the Lost Gardens of Heligan, the road from St Austell to the gardens has several campsites to choose from en route.  The reason I have given these details is in case there are members like ourselves who are not very familiar with Cornwall and who like to travel with the minimum of booking and planning.

FIRESTONE TYRES

RDH have been doing some chasing over the last few months regarding the proneness of Firestone tyres to fail.  Both FIAT and Benimar say that they are not responsible as the specification for the tyres is correct for the vehicles concerned. It seems odd that, apart from 2 Dunlops, all the problems are with Firestone tyres fitted to the rear. Firestone have inspected 6 tyres that we know of and say there is no evidence of manufacturing defect.
If you have any problems with Firestones then please contact Firestone, as the more evidence we can accrue the stronger our case will be.

THE TRUTH GUIDE

The Truth Guide is a web site that aims to provide independent information on camping and caravanning sites in the UK and parts of Europe. The guide will give you true facts and figures as well as in depth reviews by people who have actually been to the sites. Information is gathered on the system by filling out a simple reviews section on the web, which is then allocated to the correct area of the country.  As caravanners ourselves, it is our objective to publish concise information on sites visited, share information and be able to pass helpful hints to others.  The web page has various other sections - for example - The For Sale section, News and Information, Reviews of Sites, Business Classified, and a Did You Know information section. There is also Letters to the Editor where the best letter of the month wins a £5 book voucher.
The web address is :- http://www.thetruthguide.com
the rest is up to you.

(Still a rather sparse site, the reviews are concentrated in the Midlands but obviously the more people to use it the more useful it becomes.  Worth a visit if only to look at the security add in the Business Classified!     Webmaster)

ACCEO AGM

This was held on 12th October 2002 and our delegate in attendance was Bruce Lawson .  He reports that It was a very quiet affair with no changes to the committee.  Two topics of discussion were ;-
1. Whether a tent alongside a caravan or motorhome requires sanitation. Discussions with DEFRA are ongoing.
2. Extended rallying and rallying in the National Parks will require some form of certificate from 2004
The venue for next years AGM and accompanying rally was also discussed and was to be decided later.

Thanks Bruce for being our delegate and to Janet for keeping him company - Ed

The ACCEO AGM Rally could well be another one for us to include in our calendar if it doesn’t clash.

VAN BITZ GAS DETECTOR

If you are worried about the threat of being "gassed" while asleep, then you will be interested in this new device. It detects the gas before it puts you to sleep and is wired in to the Strikeback alarm system.  The sensor costs £99 when installed with Strikeback, or £125 when installed in to an existing installation. It is not available as a stand alone alarm.  For more information contact RDH or Van Bitz.

CHAIRMANS CHAT

Spanish Tour

Judy and I spent October and November in France and Spain, enjoying the sunniest, warmest October for many years (as opposed to the wettest one in the UK). We spent some time looking for suitable sites to hold our first "overseas" rally and having discounted quite a few, we think we have found a couple that will be suitable.
We also visited the Benimar Factory (just missing Steve, Rick and Rod by a couple of days). We met Esther Geensen (the daughter of the owner before Trigano took over) and we are currently arranging a Factory Visit as part of the Rally.
Whilst on our favourite site at Denia we met up with 3 other Club couples. When we arrived Ken and Eileen Holland were already there, moving off after a few days. Then Peter and Shirley Gordon (who we had not met previously) arrived for a few weeks before moving towards Portugal and then returning this way on their route to the French Alps for some skiing.  A few days later Nichol and Lorna Thomson arrived in a shower of rain in their new Aereo. They are wintering in nearby Altea and have family in the area and others coming over to visit them.

Satellite TV

I have observed that on arrival at continental sites there is a ritual takes place of setting up the digital TV system - sometimes taking 3 days or so.  We have analogue and it is very quick to tune in and I have always felt quite smug. This year however there is only Eurosport and CNBC Financial news left, which hardly makes for exciting viewing. Judy and I have concluded that next year it will be digital or leave the tv at home. I have started the process by leaving my old dish and LNB in a dustbin in Spain.  Whilst discussing the topic with Nichol at Denia he gave me a guide to tuning in with digital which you will find somewhere in this issue.

Altitude Warning

If you travel from sea level up into the mountains and have a problem with your loo valve sticking, do not put the lid up and observe closely whilst trying to free the valve. It is probably the difference in pressures that is making it stick and when it does free you will get a face full of blue-green liquid. If you don’t believe me just ask Nichol Thomson !!

Grunberg Toro and?

For some years I have been meaning to visit a certain French town.

On our last trip we managed it.

Protec Cover

You may remember the advert for a Protec Motorcaravan Cover in the last issue. The best offer, in fact the only offer, was from Tim Hall with the proceeds swelling Club funds.

VW Launch

We were recently caravanning at Tamarit Park near to Tarragona (we are finishing the Spanish Rally there).  Next to the site is Tamarit Castle standing on a headland. VW had taken over the place to promote their new 4WD car. Each evening a group of dealers and journalists, were given a banquet and then entertained to an outdoor show with a huge screen showing the new model with dancers, fire eaters, abseiling dancers and even a grand piano stuck out on a rocky island. The evening finished with fireworks on the beach, right by our pitch.  This was repeated each evening for about 3 weeks, we left after 5 nights.  The car has since been launched at the German Motor Show. It is called the Touareg. The range starts at a 2.5 turbo diesel at about £28,000 and tops out with a V12 at over £60,000.  It is not available in the UK until early summer.

RDH News

Sharon Edwards has joined the team as an administrator and added some long overdue glamour to the office.
Club members can get a 20% discount on the 3 in 1 Benimar Jackets (all sizes available).
In a recent Karting evening the Office came 2nd out of 15 teams to trounce the Workshop who came a miserable 12th.

TUNING INTO DIGITAL TV

Digital satellite programmes are broadcast by the Astra 2 system which is located at 28.2 degrees East (roughly ESE), so the first thing to do is find the approximate compass setting. A digital satellite finder, as widely advertised in caravanning magazines, is frankly a waste of money and unlikely to be much better than a £2 compass. It is also not necessary to purchase a large diameter dish -the only requirement is that the the dish has a digital LNB. Even in southern Europe a standard domestic minidish will probably suffice.
To tune the system proceed as follows. (Warning: always disconnect the digibox from the mains before connecting or disconnecting any other equipment, including the dish).
First ensure that there are no trees or other obstacles in the way of the dish and then connect the dish to the digibox and switch on the power. The digibox will take a few seconds to respond, so do not worry is the remote control doesn’t seem to work.
On the remote control, press Services, then press 4, then 6. This will display a Signal Test screen. Ignore the Signal Strength and Signal Quality bars - they are not relevant to the tuning process. Against Network ID and Transport Stream will be 0000 (zeros).
Place the TV where the screen can be seen while manipulating the dish. Turn the dish to the South and then a bit at a time turn it to towards the East until the zeros are replaced by a mix of numbers and lower case letters (typically Network ID will show 0002 and Transport Stream will show 07d4 though the values may vary). The change will be quite sudden, so go carefully to avoid moving the dish too far. The Lock Indicator will also change from "Not Locked" to "OK".
As soon as the Network ID and Transport Stream values change from zeros a digital signal is being received. It really is as simple as that. Clamp the dish, being careful not too alter the position, then press "Backup" on the remote control 3 times to return to the normal screen.
If the zeros remain unchanged, the elevation of the dish is probably wrong. Most dishes have an elevation scale marked on the mast clamp. On a line from North Wales to Hull the elevation should be 22 degrees. The further North you are the lesser the angle, and the further South the higher the angle (varies approximately 1 degree per 100 miles - 24 degrees in London, 35 degrees in Barcelona for example).
Alter the elevation slightly and try again. If after aligning the dish, you get a signal but there is interference on sound or vision, it is almost certainly caused by the dish elevation being slightly wrong, and a minor adjustment up or down will correct it.
Note that once the signal has been decoded the digibox will retain its settings, so if the dish is subsequently moved for any reason, causing a loss of picture, it will be necessary to unplug the power for about 30 seconds in order to reset the Network and Transport Stream values before attempting to align the dish again.
The Astra 2 systems transmit a North beam and a South beam. All digiboxes supplied in the UK are set to receive the North beam by default and this setting will work throughout northern Europe and even as far south as Spain and northern Italy. However, if you are further south it is necessary to change the default transponder setting to the south beam. Using the remote control, press Services then 4. Now in succession press 0,1 and Select. This will give access to the Installer Set-up screen. Press 2. Now using the keypad on the remote control, change the Frequency from 11.778 to 11.719. Now press the Down arrow key to highlight the Polarisation field and using the left or right arrow key change Polarisation to H.
Press the down arrow key 3 times to return to the main screen.
Switch off the power for 30 seconds and then go through the dish alignment procedure as described above. On the South beam, the Lock Indicator panel will continue to show Not Locked but this is quite normal and will not affect reception.
On the South beam, Channels 4 and 5 are not available, nor are Sky’s premium channels such as Movies or Sport. Nevertheless there is still plenty of choice, including all the BBC’s TV and Radio channels. The same viewing card will work on either beam.

Best of Luck

Nichol Thomson

The rally starts at Eurocamping at Oliva which is about 75 miles south of Valencia.
The site borders the coast and has direct access to miles of sandy beach.
The site has a good restaurant and a well stocked shop. Toilet facilities are good and clean, and there is a new toilet block being built which should be completed by the time we visit.
The pitches are very spacious by Spanish standards and access reasonably easy.
The small town of Oliva is 3 miles away where there are all the usual facilities and a good Mercadona Supermarket. There is no bus service however so its walk, bicycles or scooters.
For golfing enthusiast Oliva Nova Golf is next door.
There will be a Boules competition so bring your balls.
There will be a group Meal at the site restaurant on the final evening.

The factory is only about 6 miles away from the campsite and there is plenty of parking in their car park. The visit should last about 1 ½ hours.
Then its 90 miles drive along the coast to Tamarit Park at Altafulla near Tarragona.
Follow on rally for 4 nights at Tamarit Park.
This is a large well run site that again is right alongside the sandy beach. The facilities are very good and there is a shop and restaurant that will be open.

STEVES TIPS

Well winter is well and truly upon us and it’s time for some preventative maintenance.

Firstly - Battery Checks.
Neither battery is particularly easy to get at but a small mirror and a torch or lead lamp will help here.
Engine Battery fist.
Remove the battery cell caps and using the mirror check the electrolyte levels. If low then top up with distilled water only. A cheap (and seasonal( turkey baster can help do the trick here. If any cells appear dry, then after topping up use a hydrometer (available at most motor spares outlets such as Halfords) to check the condition of the electrolyte. Dry cells can mean a faulty battery and a hydrometer test will indicate if a replacement is needed. Finish up by greasing the battery terminals and while under the bonnet, grease the bonnet release catch & cable, and check the water, brake fluid and power steering levels.
Leisure Battery
next.
Depending on the model it may be necessary to remove the driver’s seat. This is held down by 4 Torx type fasteners; 2 at the front of the seat runners and 2 through the rear. Take care when lifting the seat clear as they are very heavy and must be lifted clear of the handbrake mechanism. Once access is gained treat it as for the engine battery.
Tyres
next.
Check for any damage - cracked walls, uneven sections of tread, low tread depth etc. The AA recommend a minimum depth of 3mm for winter use. Finally check the pressures. The correct pressures can be found displayed on the door pillar of your van. Don’t forget the spare.
General Lubrication
Purchase a can of spray grease or oil and use this to lubricate all external moving parts including the step, corner steadies, waste valve and all door locks. Don’t be tempted to use WD40 as this soon evaporates and can even remove some of the original lubricant.
Lights
Have someone help you check your lights, including trailer connections if applicable. It’s a good idea to carry a spare set of bulbs in your toolkit at this time of year. See and be seen might sound a bit corny but it is good advice nevertheless,
And finally, if you are intending to leave your vehicle standing for any length of time throughout the winter don’t forget to drain the water from both hot and cold systems. Leave all taps and waste tank valve open and fit any covers you may have to fridge and water heater vents.
That’s about it for now. It just remains for me to wish you all a (belated) Merry Xmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

Steve.

AIRES IN FRANCE

Ron Smith

There are many different sorts of Aires in France all of interest to Motor Caravanners.

Aires de Service on Autoroutes and some of the route nationals. These are much like our Motorway Service Stations (except that the food is edible). They are useful for an overnight stop as you can park free, but there seem to be a high incidence of break-ins and robberies by gangs. Personally we do not use them for that reason.

Aires de Repos these again occur regularly on Autoroutes and other main roads. Many have picnic areas, toilets, drinking water taps and often a Frites van. Again these can be used as overnight stops but the same concerns apply.

Aires Municipales or Aires Communale. These are aimed specifically at Motor Caravans (or Camping Cars as the French call them). They are provided by a community (village or town) and provide parking and all or some of the following :- Drinking Water Waste Water disposal Chemical Toilet emptying Electrical supply Overnight Parking These facilities may be supplied free or there may be a small charge (by coins or token from the tourist office or Marie). They are often sited in a park, near to the sports ground or the Marie, and are well signed in the village from the main route through -see photograph below for a typical example -

They are very useful if you are travelling in France and not visiting campsites.

The photograph below shows a typical service point, in this case a Flot Bleu which was taken in a town called Aire sur Adour (just to confuse matters even more)

EXCITING TIMES AHEAD

The layout below is a new model designed by RDH based on the Aereo 6000. It features double settee, drop-leaf table, L shaped kitchen, sink Now Trigano are involved you can expect some exiting changes. This with drainer, new bathroom with circular shower, TV above the cab. It is a luxury 2 berth and will be available in the Luton 6000 , and maybe on the Top. RDH hope that it will be available for the NEC in February. The cost is £36,500.  Should ensure that Benimar keeps to the forefront of the Motorhome sector

.

Unfortunately I have not received an electronic copy of the drawing and the rather poor image above is scanned from the magazine.  Webmaster
