EDITORS COLUMN

Well, the Spanish Rally has been and gone. It was difficult to judge the response that it would generate but I was pleased that we had a good turnout - 14 members outfits and a 1 visitor. It was hard and frustrating at times but I think that everyone enjoyed it. There is a good chance that we will have a double-header - 2 week rally in the south of France followed by another in Spain, during September/October time.

We are still struggling to find marshals. The Ashbourne Rally has been cancelled because the Jacksons have sold their Benimar and resigned. The Thames Valley Show Rally has been cancelled because there were no volunteers.

The Shepton and York rallies still have no volunteers so they too are in danger. So, it is up to you, the members. If you want a good selection of rallies to attend, then think "What can I do for the club?" not "What can the Club do for me?.

On a brighter note, Paul tells me that he tried to book Eden Camp again for next year, but all the dates were booked so he is sorting a date out for 2005.

I have included an article on what Marshalling a Rally entails to help you volunteer.

The next issue is due out at the beginning of July, so input to me by 20th June at the latest please.

I can now read emails with attachments.

FIRST ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Minutes of the First Annual General

Meeting of the Benimar Owner’s Club which was held in the Grandstand at the National Motorhome Show at Peterborough on Saturday 27th April 2002.

In attendance: Celia Rustom, Peter Rustom, Ron Smith, Judy Smith, Dave Amende, Pete Wilson, Joy Wilson,

Colin Varley, Frances Varley, Moya Warner, David Warner, Michael Carter, Joyce Carter, Sam Black, Mary Pennington, George Pennington, Steve Jones, Barbara Jones, Edna Follows, Geoff Follows, Sid Carvall, Betty Carvall,, Val Gordon, Terry Gordon, Roy Gill, Sylvia Gill, Graham Baines, Chris Baines, Mavis Baldwin, Brian Baldwin, Pat Darbyshire, Tony Darbyshire, Bernard Marshall, Jean Marshall, Hazel de Souza, Izzy de Sousa, Keith House, Philip Bradbeer, Jean Bradbeer, Jill Dickerson, Gerald Dickerson, Dave Hill, Evelyn Hill, Ann Pool, Brian Swanson, John Harris, June Harris, Ray Watson, Joy Watson, Lorna Thomson, Nichol Thomson, Jane Perry, Geoff Perry, Ian Tilley, Sylvia Tilley, Michael Jackson, Teresa Jackson, Pat Abbott, Arthur Abbott, Jan Brown, Paul Brown, Sue Apperley, Chris Apperley, Paul Smeaton, Carol Smeaton,, John Houghton, Jenny Houghton, Hilda Brearley, Bob Brearley, Beryl Peer, Dennis Peer, Ian Johnston, Agnes Johnston, Honor Hewitt, Tim Hewitt, Pip Rowe and Rod Harris representing RDH, and several prospective members who were awaiting delivery of their new Benimar Motorhomes.

The Chairman, Mr Ron Smith, opened the meeting at 2.10pm. He explained that the venue had been changed from the Gazebos on the rally field because of the strong winds. RDH had generously offered to pay for a room in the ICI centre, but as none was available members had been forced to take refuge from the rain and the gales in the Grandstand (for which there was no charge). This weekend Peterborough was vying with Chicago as the Windy City.

1. Apologies for absence had been received from Cassie and Brian Hersee, Graham and Chris Butler and Gloria House.

2. The minutes of the Inaugural Meeting which was held on the 28th April 2001, were taken as read.

3. Matters arising - there were none.

4. Two amendments to the constitution were put forward:-

a. There shall be a position of Honorary President which the Club may award. This position will be voted for at the AGM and will be for a term of three years.

Several members queried the necessity of having a President. The Chairman explained that he felt it was appropriate for the Club to have a figurehead and that it was a way of showing our appreciation to someone who was very supportive to the Club.

The motion was proposed by Alex Waugh and Seconded by Paul Smeaton. The motion was carried 70 votes for, 3 against, 3 abstentions.

b. Each member will automatically become a family/personal member of "The Association of Camping and Caravanning Exempted Organisations (ACCEO)". The cost of membership will be included in the Club Annual Subscription. It will not be possible for an individual to opt out.

The Chairman explained that DEFRA requires all clubs to obtain an Exemption Certificate if they wish to rally on unlicensed sites. Most site owners also require clubs to have Public Liability Insurance. The best deal available for insurance was by joining ACCEO who will provide £3 million Public Liability Insurance. ACCEO works on behalf of all the members of its 200 plus clubs, over 35,000 campers, providing a united voice on government, legal and local matters.

The subscription of £3 per family per year, due 1st January 2003, will be included in the Benimar Owners’ Club Subscription for the foreseeable future. The annual Club subscription is waived if it is a condition of the Benimar Owners’ Club that all members become individual/family members. ACCEO produces a magazine and has negotiated some discounts for its members.

The motion was proposed by Peter Rustom and seconded by Pip Rowe. Carried with 2 abstentions.

5. Hon Chairman’s Report

The chairman began by wishing the Club a Happy First Birthday. He was very pleased with the growth and delighted by the number of members who had come to the AGM. Now that we have over 200 members, Safeguard Insurance and RDH have agreed to give us discounts.

The Chairman thanked RDH for their support in setting up the Club, especially providing a Service van at the larger shows, so that far flung members don’t always have to travel to Nottingham. The news that RDH had provided a couple of cases of wine to help the Birthday celebrations was greeted with grateful applause.

The Chairman was glad that the members had agreed to join ACCEO and now the Club is covered by £3m public liability insurance members can camp on unlicensed sites.

Vehicle stickers were available for all members, price £1 each plus postage. The Club had purchased 3 gazebos for use at rallies, but sadly, the strong winds of the previous day had damaged them. (Tony Darbyshire kindly volunteered to see if the large one was repairable).

The Chairman thanked the Committee for their help throughout the year. He thanked the auditors for approving the Accounts which had been so carefully kept by Mrs. Pip Rowe. He thanked his wife, Mrs Judy Smith for her help.

6. Event Co-ordinators Report

The club held 7 rallies in the previous 12 months, plus Peterborough 2001
Lincoln - Marshals Ron and Judy Smith
Shepton Mallet - Marshals Brian and Mavis Baldwin
Breen Sands - Marshals Brian and Mavis Baldwin
York - Marshals - Geoff and Edna Follows
Shepton Mallet - Marshals Ron and Judy Smith
Cotswolds Water Park - Marshals Dennis and Beryl Peer
This was our first independent rally and was a great success.
Peterborough - Marshals Ron and Judy Smith
Mr Smith thanked all the marshals and their assistants. He also thanked Tim and Honor Hewitt for making the BOC Club signs.

During the next few months the following rallies have been planned: Stratford, Kent Show, Lincoln, Netley Marsh, Shepton Mallet and York.

A rally to Spain to visit Steve Reynolds (RDH) finca and the Benimar Factory is not possible at the moment. The finca does not have a suitable site and the factory does not allow visits because of insurance regulations, but it is hoped that something will be arranged in the future, especially as several members are planning to buy property in Spain.

Mr Smith thanked Honor and Tim Hewitt for organising the barbecue.

An Events Co-ordinator is needed as Mr. Ron Smith already has plenty to do as Chairman and Newsletter Editor. If marshals do no volunteer for the proposed rallies they will have to be cancelled.

7. Newsletter Editor’s Report

Newsletters were produced in May, August, November and February, and the next one will be published in early May. Mr. Smith thanked all the contributors and asked the Membership to keep him up to date with all their news.

8. Hon Secretary’s Report

Mrs Celia Rustom reported that from the small nucleus of 40, the Club membership had grown to over 220. She asked members to be patient if they do not receive prompt replies to their letters, as she and her husband are often away in their Benimar. Only three members have failed to renew their membership this year, and the club continues to grow steadily. RDH are very helpful in giving each new owner a Membership Application Form.

The Secretary asked Members to be sure and let her know of any change of address or other details.

Finally she thanked her husband for his patience and the Committee for their support throughout this inaugural year.

9. Hon Treasurer’s Report

Ms Pip Rowe was delighted to report that the Club had a balance of £963.90 income over expenditure. The printing costs for the magazine and the Secretary’s expenses were still outstanding, but the Club is in a very healthy financial position. Ms. Rowe thanked the Auditors. The Treasurer then asked the Members to take the accounts as read.

Proposed by Paul Smeaton, Seconded by Mavis Baldwin: Adopted unanimously.

9. Election of Officers

Committee Members

Chairman: Ron Smith Proposed: Peter Rustom, Seconded: Mary Pennington

Secretary: Celia Rustom Proposed: Mary Pennington, Seconded: Keith House

Mem Secretary: Celia Rustom Proposed: Judy Smith, Seconded: Pat Darbyshire

Treasurer: Pip Rowe Proposed: Paul Smeaton, Seconded: Colin Varley

Magazine Editor: Ron Smith Proposed: Ian Tilley, Seconded: Mary Pennington

Press Sec: Ron Smith Proposed: Alex Waugh, Seconded: Sylvia Tilley

Events Co-ordinator: Roy Gill Proposed: Mary Pennington, Seconded: Pip Rowe

After some discussion it was decided to appoint two Chief Marshals because the Club is so scattered.

C M - South: Colin Varley Proposed: Honor Hewitt, Seconded: Paul Smeaton

C M - North: Michael Jackson Proposed: Mick Carter, Seconded: Joy Wilson

Non Committee Members:

Auditors: Honor Hewitt and Geoff Perry agreed to act as auditors for a further year.

10. Any Other Business

a. After a short discussion on the strength and weaknesses of various types of Gazebo, it was agreed in principal that the Committee should buy several good gazebos for use at rallies. Costs could be spread over several years, although it was felt that the Club should spend the money raised by subscription to avoid accumulating an excessive savings account.

It was felt that a single large gazebo would be too difficult to transport and store, and that several smaller ones could be kept in the regions for use at local rallies. At big events, such as the AGM, they could be linked together to provide shelter for all our members.

Proposed by Paul Smeaton, Seconded by Mavis Baldwin. Adopted unanimously.

b. Phil Bradbeer asked if it would be possible for RDH/Benimar to provide wiring diagrams and layout drawings of the vehicles, so that members would be able to see where it was safe to adept their vehicles, screw on attachments etc. Rod Harris (RDH) said he would investigate.

c. A vote of thanks to Ron Smith for all his hard work was proposed by Peter Rustom and carried unanimously.

d. Honorary President: Steve Reynolds (RDH) Proposed by Ron Smith: Seconded by Paul Smeaton. Carried unanimously.

e. A member advised the Club that the best insurance deal he had found was with CIS.

11. Date of Next Meeting

The next meeting will be held at the National Motorhome Show at Peterborough in April 2003.

The Meeting closed at 15:15pm.

Celia Rustom

If you are attending the AGM, and I hope that you do, can you bring the above minutes of the last meeting with you - it will save printing umpteen extra sets

The 2nd AGM will take place during the rally at the Peterborough Show.

Time 2:00 pm

Date Saturday April 26th

Venue Huntington Suite (the old Barclays Bank)

Please try to attend even if you only visit the show on the Saturday.

There are two resolutions to be considered at the AGM.

1. That the constitution be amended to allow residents in the Channel Islands to be included as I am sure that is what we all assumed. Apparently the term UK does not include them and we have 2 members in Jersey.

Paragraph 3. (a) to read

"Membership shall be open to any owner, or potential owner of a Benimar Motorhome, residing in the UK or the Channel Islands."

2. That the constitution be amended to allow a new category of member which will allow former Club members who either no longer are the owner of a Benimar and/or who no longer reside in the UK or Channel Islands.

Paragraph 3. (e) is added which reads

" Associate Membership is available to any former member who no longer is the owner of a Benimar Motorhome and/or no longer lives in the UK or Channel Islands and wishes to continue his/her association with the Club. Associate members will not have any voting rights."

MEMBERS’ LETTERS

Short and Sweet

Barbara & Colin Wood

I am writing to tell you that we have sold our Benimar this October for a Buccaneer Cruiser at the Caravan Show at Earls Court.
I am sorry that we never got to meet any other members, as my mother was taken very ill in early June and we lost her in September at the age of 92, so we did not get to use our Motorhome, but we loved your Magazine and felt that we met you after reading all your letters.

Advice on Problems

Stephen Alcock

My wife Judith and I have been members since August having acquired our new Europe 6000ST in early July.
Despite a few problems (some ongoing) we are very pleased with it and spent 7 weeks in France and Spain in the Autumn. We met both Celia and Pip at the Peterborough Show just before we ordered our ‘van and they were both very welcoming.
My purpose in writing is twofold. Firstly to comment on the magazine, website and useful information available to members. For a relatively small club the magazine and website are most impressive. You did ask for feedback on the idea of producing colour photos in the mag. For what it’s worth my view is that production should be kept as simple and inexpensive as possible. Producing it must take a lot of effort and the danger with all these things is it becomes too much of a burden for too few enthusiastic volunteers.
What I am particularly keen to hear about is the experiences of other members especially in respect of problems they have had with their ‘vans, how they have been resolved and what modifications / improvements they have made and for tips on preventative maintenance. Which brings me to the second point - that of speaking to Club members who may be able to advise me on one or two technical issues. I should say that Rod from RDH has always been very helpful with anything that has been defective or that I’ve asked about, but it would be good to speak with other members who have had similar experiences.
The problems have been relatively minor - solar panel, rear corner steady, turbo hose, fridge installation (mostly resolved), leisure battery (soon to be resolved, I hope), waste tank smells (unresolved at the moment) and a small number of other more minor things including queries on tyre pressures.
We will be going to the Shepton Mallet Show this coming weekend and hopefully there may be the opportunity to talk to other members there. Obviously it will be more difficult to make contact since there is no Club Rally as such.
Which brings me on to my final point about having enough enthusiastic volunteers to keep the Club fully active. If the Club is to work well I fully realise that it needs members to do things, although I am not sure what I can do to help.
Given our other commitments at present we are not able to marshal a rally (and have no experience) and since we will be away from home (the van will be at home for 6 months of the year) I could not take on any administrative tasks. Not much help really, but we appreciate we can’t expect everyone else to do all the work. What I would find useful is a list of members who are happy to provide advice to others (new members in particular).
Having owned a campervan for 5 years and a Benimar for only 6 months I’m not really ready to offer any advice but in time I would be happy to be included in such a list. My thanks for all you already do provide for members.

New Year in Disneyland Paris

Paul & Carol Smeaton

For the second year running we decided to spend the new year celebrations in Disneyland Paris.
The atmosphere is fantastic, with everyone enjoying themselves and no sign of trouble of any kind. It is very busy and anyone wishing to sample all the rides will have to queue for most of the day.
The atmosphere at night is electric with music all over the park and most people dancing in the streets and having a great time culminating in a firework display at midnight.
From the point of view of motorcaravanners, Disney is a perfect place to stay. The normal car parking fee is 8 euros, but for 17 euros motorhomes can stay overnight which, in effect means that your pitch is 9 euros a night !
This is throughout the year and, since there is a rail station on site , it is an ideal base for visiting Paris. There are toilets, showers, water and disposal points but no electric hook ups.

An alternative site near Eden

Pete & Joy Wilson

We read the recent article regarding a site within easy access of the Eden Project and felt that we should mention one that we found last summer.
The site is Medros Farm, Par PL24 2SX (tel: 01726 612923) and we found it in the Caravan Club book, listed as a CL, but the owner advised us that from 2003 he was going independent as he could now accommodate more that 5 ‘vans.
The site has electric hook ups and a porta-cabin showers and loo unit and costs £6.00 per night. It was extremely clean and well maintained with the bonus of super views. It is actually situated about ½ mile from the Eden Project, so we left our ‘van on site and went to Eden by bike, our journey took us about 10 minutes with our brakes on most of the way as it was all downhill. By going to Eden by bike we actually saved £3 per person on the admission charge, which paid for our overnight stay.
The journey back to the site was mostly undertaken on foot as we neither of us cycle uphill very well, but was not unpleasant and took about ½ hour.
We can also empathise with Nichol and his high altitude loo experience, as we too suffered a similar fate on a visit to Andorra in 2002. It is at times such as these when one really appreciates the versatility of a shower hose !!

Dave reaches a Milestone

Dave Amende

Well, what a year 2002 turned out to be !
After 9 months leave of absence from work and a 2001 tour of Western Europe covering 60,000 miles looking for inner light I found it 10 yards from the front door.
Well, not exactly. It was on returning to a full time job on 2nd Jan 2002 that I e-mailed an ex neighbour and fellow pupil at Bowden C of E Junior School in Cheshire. We had not met since 1973. I was leaving school when Louise was graduating from the infants’ class. We had both registered with "Friends Reunited" and spent many weeks exchanging electronic mail before meeting up in April. Louise lives in York so it was nice to combine a trip "up north" with meeting some of the BOC members at the York Rally in September.
We managed to get T752BNN down to Cornwall in October through gale force winds and it was here on a windswept but otherwise stunning Lands End that I proposed to Louise. To my great delight she said "Yes" and we are now planning our wedding in York Minster on the 17th May 2003. We have plenty of room in the Minster and all BOC members are welcome to attend the service at 2pm.
We shall be moving to Stockton-on-Tees where I will be working at a branch office and Louise will be showing prospective buyers round the ‘van. Yes it will have to go, along with the freewheeling touring lifestyle. In its place will be a Volvo and a Labrador and a lot of happy memories.
We’ve had a great time with BOC and look forward to joining again in a few years time (shame that there’s no social membership for non/previous owners) when we can afford to run a Benimar again.

(If the resolution is passed at the AGM you will be able to renew your membership Dave - Ed)

A couple of Modifications

Martin Wheeler

If like me you are a fiddler and can’t leave anything alone you will probably have looked at the false drawer which hides the gas taps and thought, what a waste of space, I must be able to do something with that. So here’s what I did.
Remote Control Storage Drawer

Start by cutting a square of thin plywood to the shape of the underside of the drawer (so that it fits between the metal runner supports. Then make the required amount of dividers to fit either front to back or left to right to suit.. I made mine from wood but they could just as easily be made from strong card. Cover it with card table felt or similar to stop rattles and screw the assembled divider underneath the drawer. My drawer holds the remotes for the TV, the video/dvd, the rear corner steadies, the radio and the front panel of the radio. I chose to store the radio front in it’s box which meant I had to position it on the right hand side of the drawer and file away a small amount of the wooden support which supports the taps. There is still room for pens, pencils, scissors etc.
Quick, simple and cheap and no more searching for the remotes.

(On our 3 year old Europe there is a real drawer there already - Ed)

Floor Filler
Ever tripped down the ridge from the van into the cab?
Solution - visit your local DIY store and purchase a pack of insulation board used for laminate floors. This material is easy to cut and by cutting it to shape and gluing layers together you can fill the gap and level the floor. It is cheap, weighs next to nothing and when the carpet is laid back over the top you will never know it is there.

Firestone again

Michael Bottle

While travelling on the M25 just before Christmas during fog and light rain we (my wife and I suffered a nearside tyre blow out. We were travelling at 50/55mph and the tyres went down immediately, but we were able to put the hazard lights on and pull into the hard shoulder with no other damage.
The recovery engineer who came out raised the query as to how we were supposed to get the spare out from its location near the back axle with only the jack supplied, as when the traffic was passing the body of the camper was sucked up about 3 to 4 inches then released again, as this would probably have resulted in the jack becoming mis aligned or falling. We dare not think of the consequences should I have been removing the spare from its cradle at the time.
The engineer remarked that the tread had separated from the casing and lifted away breaking the steel inserts at the same time, and the incident should be reported to the tyre supplier for claim.
We thanked him and the prompt action of Safeguard Insurance and got out of our soaked clothing (we had been standing on the hard shoulder for 2 hours now in the cold and rain), and carried on home.
I went into the local Watling Tyre Company after having explained to Firestone on the phone about the incident, who after checking the other rear tyre and finding that this had started swelling over about 10" ordered and subsequently fitted two new Michelin Camping tyres which are slightly larger 215 as against. 205 Firestone
I am now waiting to see if any refund will be coming my way for the 2 tyre claim as they had only covered 13460 miles in the 2 years since purchase.
Is it possible that the air suspension on the rear may be having an adverse effect on the rear tyres? As I previously had Firestone 2000 tyres on my Kontiki and over the 13 years of ownership I never had any problems.
The news magazine is very welcome and we look forward to its arrival.

EDEN CAMP RALLY

Marshal’s Report

Paul Smeaton

We arrived at approximately 2.00pm and registered at Reception, went to our parking area and walked back to put up signs. Others began arriving from around 4.00pm and by 5.00pm we were all on site, 5 units in total, including David and Veronica Sprason who were on their first BOC Rally. After settling in and eating we assembled in our own assigned "Hut 12", where we had chairs, tables, lights and heating and our own key to keep it locked!, for a little welcome meeting followed by a get-together. It seems that Ian’s get-together may have been even more social - see Ann Pool’s report !! For some reason it could have been something to do with all the electric heaters we plugged in.
On Saturday morning, after the usual "What have you been fitting/altering on your ‘van?" interlude we all proceeded to visit the exhibits in the various huts of Eden Camp. In the evening we had a few games and quite a lot of fun in Hut 12 before retiring.
Sunday we had a short get together for coffee after which David and Veronica wished us fond farewell and set off to visit Castle Howard before going home. We all met in the canteen for an excellent lunch and finished our day around the museum. All too soon we had to say our goodbyes and setoff home (except for Ian and Agnes who were going on to Scarborough). All in all, I think the rally went pretty well.

Ralliers Report

Ann Pool & Brian Swanson

Friday 21st March. All arrived and were present and correct at 18.00hrs. The unsuspecting David and Veronica Swanson were given a warm welcome, since it was their first BOC Rally. 19.30 hrs we all met up in "Hut 12", which was ours for the whole of the weekend to use as a clubroom. We had a meeting followed by a more social gathering after finding Ian in the baby changing room with two blondes with legs up to their armpits (he claimed, somewhat weakly, that it was warmer in there!. We knew it was him because he was wearing the name badge made for him by the kids at Carol’s school. Thanks Kids! 20.30hrs the 1940s theme really came to the fore when all the power went off. But since our marshals took their duties seriously, and kept up the 1940s theme. We were soon enjoying again by the glow of candles and a gas lamp.

Saturday 22nd 10.00hrs camp opened and we set about visiting the 29 exhibition huts which included, women at war, the U boat menace, the Blitz, bomber ops, POWs and even a prefab among many others. Everyone said it was a tribute to the people of the time and well worth the experience.
The museum closed at 17.00hrs so back to our own devices. SO- after rations and chores it was back to hut 12 where games and in camp entertainment provided by our own entertainment officers, Carol and Paul, assisted by the rest of us. A good time was had by all until lights out (this time using the switch) --Good Night Sweethearts.

Sunday 23rd 10.00hrs, the museum reopened and we then went in search of the huts we missed yesterday. We had a little coffee morning in Hut 12 after which David and Veronica said their cheerios and departed. We arranged to meet at 13.00hrs for lunch, which was excellent. I think everyone opted for the stew and dumplings, which were very good, plentiful and CHEAP. The staff in the NAFFI were very welcoming as were all the Eden Camp staff. Alas 17.00hrs arrived and we had to depart Eden Camp so we all said our goodbyes and Agnes waved fondly to the very special (ie stuffed) security guards who had watched over us from their wooden turrets at the edge of the parking area. We would recommend the museum to all and FULLY recommend the weekend rally to everyone. Many thanks again Paul & Carol.

2003 SPANISH RALLY

Roy Gill

The rally commenced at Eurocamping, Oliva on Saturday March 1st 2003 and 15 outfits (including 1 guest) arrived by the next day. Like all good organisers, Ron had arranged the weather, for on that day the Spanish good weather began - though it tended to be a little chilly once the sun started to set.
Ron had arranged for an area of the camp site for Benimar members.
The marquee was set up and ready for the inaugural meeting, a general get together to chew the fat of experiences of the members of their holiday so far in travelling to the rally.
The first official meeting took place on Sunday, where Ron suitably positioned at the lectern (power point), welcomed the members and proposed an itinerary for the rally. First was a "Pre-dinner drink and nibbles" that evening where we could relax and get to know one another.
The first event was the Boules Competition, comprising of man and wife teams, the first to 13 being the winner. A draw took place to decide the order of play. The start of the Boules was Monday, and considering that most of the entrants claimed not to have played before, the competition was to a high standard.
Mary & George Pennington won through to the final to play Nichol & Lorna Thomson. As M & G were scheduled to leave on the Thursday, the final was brought forward to the Wednesday afternoon. Prior to the final a Shinto priest (looking remarkably like Nichol) blessed the match. In a nip and tuck game with no quarter given, George & Mary were the winners. Chairman Ron presented them with the magnificent Agen Trophy. For reasons known only to Ron, there was no booby prize presented for the lowest score.
That evening we assembled for a barbecue and much falling juice.
Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday, so a pancake race was organised for the ladies. Judy Smith won this and in her wisdom suggested that the men should also have a race. Like lambs to the slaughter, after a few bevies, some agreed. The outcome was that I won and received the title of "Chief Tosser".
Another of Ron’s ideas was to collect seashells, of which there was an abundance on the beach, and make an arrangement of said shells to be judged on the Saturday. Thereafter when we went on to the beach, we would see other members head down looking for suitable shells.
Friday was market day in Oliva, so the men dutifully escorted the ladies, by bike, scooter and hire-car, to look for "bargains".
As an extra, Ron produced 2 photos of two of us in "strange" positions and asked for captions; this again to be judged on the Saturday.
Saturday evening was when we all gathered at the site restaurant for a typical Spanish meal - and very good it was too. Tim Hewitt decided to do the English thing and ordered Chicken and Chips. To his credit he was very generous and sent 6 chips to be shared among the 27 of us.
After the meal, Ron made the presentations for the past weeks events, apart from the Boules which had been presented at the Wednesday BBQ.
Graham Baines, for reasons known only to himself, dressed in his pyjamas, went to adjust his awning after a downpour. He stood by one of the support legs and lowered it, getting a little damp. For this he was awarded a small umbrella. Barry Morton was presented with a water spray after one of his dogs committed a misdemeanour on the pitch of a German couple and was asked to hose it down.
Julia Tinsley was awarded with an advance copy of her new slim book "Motorcaravanning Cooking Made Easy" the content being two words "Eat Out".
For the Captions, those that could be, were read out. Shirley Morton received a combined mobile phone and gas lighter for her entry. For the picture of Ian Tilley delving into his locker Nichol won with 2 entries - he also received a gas lighter.
For winning the Ladies’ Pancake Race, Judy received a very small, lightweight racing frying pan.
For my effort in the pancake race I also received a small frying pan and also was crowned by Ron as Chief Tosser, though he was kind enough to spell it Tossa - whatever that means in Spanish.
On Sunday we all had Roast Chicken (care of the Site Restaurant) lunch together (al fresco).
Three couples left on Sunday to travel South. The rest left on Monday, departure being delayed until 10:0am as the exit road had been dug up. The venue for the night stay prior to the Benimar Factory Visit was Bonterra Camp Site at Benicassim. Some of us went for a stroll along the impressive prom to relax and partake of refreshment.
Tuesday 8:55 we left for the scheduled 10:00 am tour of the Benimar Factory - en route the was a little mist. We were welcomed by to the Factory by our guide Maurits. The tour itself was very enlightening, showing how the motorhomes were constructed from the bare chassis-cab to the finished product.
At the skip for scrap and cast-offs many members gave a fair impression of vultures over a carcass, looking for useful odds and ends.

(There will be a separate report on the visit in the next issue - Ed).

After the tour we departed for Tamarit Park near Tarragona.
Wednesday, some of us had a gentle stroll along the beach to the next village, Altafulla, for a beer.
On Thursday, we found out it was market day in Tarragona, so off we went by train to descend on the unsuspecting city. After the market we wandered up the Ramblas to a couple of Restaurants for our choices of lunch, then back, leg weary to the camp site.
On arrival back at the sie we found another Benimar - Wilf and Denise Waundby had joined us for part of their holiday, before continuing south.
On Thursday evening Ron had arranged a quiz - 20 questions loosely based on the rally. Teams of 2. The winners were Chris and Graham Baines (Graham as a sleeping partner) witha score of 17/20. The prize was a bottle of wine.
It was planned to have a final meal at the site restaurant, but due to extensive refurbishment being carried out it was not possible. Instead we went in to Altafulla for lunch. The meal was good, but the highlight was Sylvia Tilley eating Julia’s first course before Julia’s was served and the mistake spotted. It was all taken in good humour by the victims and to great merriment by the rest..
What the locals thought of the noisy goings on is hard to fathom, but imagine 17 people sitting at a long row of tables in the village square. The sun is circling the heavens. As the shadow reaches those at one end, all the table and chairs are moved so that they could stay in the sun. As the meal took several hours, this happened several times. Perhaps at a future date Ron could have it choreographed and set to music. The effect of the sun and the falling juice made it seem rather funny.
Saturday saw the departure of Richard & Christine and Alex & Julia, going their various ways.
To summarise the whole of the rally, to Ron’s credit was organised very well without too much formality, though he did look rather natty in his Jackboots and shorts. For all the members present - Thank you Ron and Judy.
As they say "If laughter is the best form of medicine" we should be a healthy crowd.
On a personal note Sylvia and I would like to thank those who "lifted" our rig off the pitch at Oliva.

Peterborough Raffle

I am planning on having a raffle during the Rally at the Peterborough Show. I already have offers of 3 prizes. If any of you attending would like to donate a prize, please bring it along and see me. All proceeds towards Club funds.

Not forgetting the Channel Islands

An e-mail from Mike Rondel who lives in Jersey pointed out that the according to the constitution membership is open to those residing in the UK, and that the Channel Islands are not part of the UK. They are not part of Great Britain either, but are part of the British Islands, a rarely used term.
As there was no intention to exclude the Channel Islands, there will be a proposal at the AGM to change the constitution accordingly.
While on the subject of membership qualifications there will also be a proposal to extend membership to those members who have changed ‘van to a make other than Benimar (shame on you) and who wish to remain in the Club. And similarly, those members who are now living abroad, and who wish to remain in the Club.

MOT for LHD Vehicles

Any of you with LHD Benimars registered in the UK have to make a few changes in order to pass the MOT.
One of these is that the single rear Fog Warning Light is on the wrong side. The usual remedy is to wire in another light on the correct side (the off-side). Graham Lewis has recently come across this and his solution was to change over the lighting units and with a two core cable make the necessary connections. The cost is only a couple of metres of cable.
He is also considering putting in a switch so that he can swap the light units over when going abroad.

More on Firestone Tyres

Following on from the letter from Michael Bottle of yet another Firestone blow-out (see More Letters) Michael tells me that Firestone refunded 90% of the cost of replacements.
If you have any problems with Firestones then please contact Firestone, as the more evidence we can accrue the stronger our case will be.
The contact is Sean Finn, Bridgestone/Firestone Technical Dept.

The Book Market

Most of you will know that we have a book market at most of our rallies. This is where members donate any unwanted books and others buy them very cheaply. Up to now I have carried these from rally to rally, but the time has come for someone else to volunteer to do this as I have run out of space and time. So anyone interested? Form an orderly queue please !

Scoop - New Benimar

After the Factory Visit last month I asked them if they were going to produce an A-Class. The answer was a guarded "Maybe, but not for at least 2 years".
However, there will be a Low-profile model for next year. This will be based on an ALKO low chassis bolted to the FIAT cab.

Benimar Caravan

In France we camped alongside a very old Benimar Touring caravan. It looked about late 50’s early 60’s vintage and still quite respectable.

MARSHALLING

We are experiencing a lack of members volunteering to marshal rallies
I can understand this, as many of you will have no experience of marshalling and probably think that there is a lot of work involved. That is not true. When Judy and I marshalled at Peterborough for the inaugural meeting in April 2001, we had never done anything like it before, so don’t let that put you off.
I think a few words on what is expected of Marshalling would be in order.

There are 2 distinct types of rally:-

1. Rallies at Outdoor Shows
2. Private rallies that the club organises under the DEFFRA Exemption Certificate.

1. Rallies at Outdoor Shows such as the shows at Peterborough, Lincoln, York, Shepton Mallet.
These are relatively easy because most of the organisation is done for us. The two main organisers are Warners who put on Peterborough, Lincoln, York and Thames Valley Shows, and Stone Leisure who put on the two at Shepton Mallet and Great Driffield.
All it needs is a little bit of extra time more than attending as a rallier.
The main points are :-

Now for the good news. Assuming that we achieve a minimum number of ‘vans, which we normally do, the Marshal does not pay the usual rally fee (you do have to pay for any additional entertainment though).
If you volunteered in good time and Roy has given your name to the organisers as Rally Marshals you can state this on the booking form, or when you phone. If not and you have already paid your fee, you can reclaim it from the Show Office.
So it isn’t that bad is it?

2. Private Rallies

The organising and marshalling of these events is covered in the Club Handbook on page 7 (you should all have a copy).
If you know of a suitable site and are willing to marshal then liaise with the Event Co-ordinator (Roy Gill) to agree a suitable date to fit into the programme and give him the details so that he can pass them on to the Editor of the Magazine for inclusion in the Dates for your Diary section. (or you can pass them direct to the Editor).
It is beneficial to the Marshal, and in some cases imperative, that members intending to attend a rally let the Marshal know in good time.
If you would like a form for members to return, then this can be included in the Magazine, if you let the Editor know the details in time.
If you can’t manage anything this year, It is not too early to be thinking about next year (2004)
If you are unsure of any aspect of marshalling give me a ring or email me, and I will do my best to answer your questions. Ron Smith

HOW TO GET MORE ITV CHANNELS ON YOUR SKY DIGITAL TUNER

Graham Baines

I understand that these are only on the North beam of the satellite which is not a strong enough signal at or below Alicante without a ‘large’ dish.
Go to "Services",

then 4 (system set up),

then 4 (add channels)
Key in this frequency 10.891 on the keypad.
Then, change polorisation to: H Symbol rate to: 22.0 and FEC to: 5/6:
Then highlight "Find Channels" then hit the Select key:
You may have to wait for a few seconds, then the following letters/numbers appear. The names of the various stations may be shown as follows.
2-9
ITV1 Anglia
ITV1 Border England
ITV1 Border Scotland
ITV1 Granada
ITV1 Meridian South
ITV1 Tyne Tees
ITV1 Yorkshire
2-8
G53
When the above is shown, press the yellow button to tick those to be stored then press the select button. Carry out the same procedures for the blocks below:
Note: Ignore the channels without titles alongside them, I tried but found I got the message:
No information.
Frequency 10.906 POL: V SR: 22.0 FEC: 5/6:
G54
3-9
ITV1: Channel Isle
Grampian TV
Scottish TV
UTV (Ulster)
ITV2
Again press the yellow button to tick those to be stored then press the Select button.
Carry out the same procedures for the blocks below:
Frequency 10.832 POL: H SR: 22.0 FEC: 5/6:
ITV1 London
ITV1 Central
ITV1 HTV Wales
ITV1 HTV West

Again, press the yellow button to tick those to be stored then press the select button.
When you go back into "Other channels" (Services then 6) your stored channels should be there. Highlight the letter/number you want to watch then press Select to activate the channel.

Good luck - it worked for me !!!

BREAKDOWN RECOVERY

As a result of the article in the last issue Graham Lewis informs me that an even better deal can be had through the CSMA (Civil Sevice Motoring Association).
You have to join CSMA first (£17 per annum) and to be eligible you need to have worked for the Civil Service or Government Department at some time in your life (I worked as a temporary postman when I was in my teens - so I reckon I qualify - Ed}.
The rescue service is provided by Britannia which is owned by CSMA.
The various levels of cover are :-
Roadside Assist + Recovery £34
RA + Recovery + Homecall £52
They don’t offer European cover.
The standard cover has height, length and weight restrictions that would not cover a Motorcaravan, but Graham assures me that they will cover any vehicle belonging to a member. He has that in writing and it would seem sensible to do the same if you decide to take up the service.
CSMA can be contacted on :-
0845 345 7444 or
info@csma.uk.com or
www.csma.uk.com
